Our client is a rapidly growing, award-winning family law firm
serving clients across Harris and Montgomery Counties in the areas
of family law, estate planning, probate, and guardianship. As the
firm continues to expand, they are seeking a seasoned Controller to
lead and oversee all aspects of financial operations. In this role,
you will manage the firm's budgeting, financial reporting, cash
management, and compliance functions. You will work closely with
the firm's leadership team to provide strategic financial insights
and play a key role in supporting the firm's long-term growth
objectives.
Controller Key Responsibilities:
Team Leadership & Oversight
Supervise and support the Bookkeeper, Billing Specialist, and
external financial vendors, including hiring, performance reviews,
and personnel decisions.
Serve as an interim Bookkeeper when needed, performing day-to-day
financial tasks.
Financial Operations Management
Oversee and execute core financial systems, including billing,
trust account management, accounts receivable and payable,
collections, payroll, bookkeeping, audits, and tax compliance.
Monitor daily cash flow, bank accounts, credit card accounts, and
client payments.
Budgeting & Strategic Planning
Collaborate with ownership and the senior management team to
develop and implement the annual business plan and budget.
Ensure alignment with the firm's financial goals and lead budget
adherence across departments.
Risk Management & Internal Controls
Evaluate, implement, and improve internal financial controls and
accounting systems.
Identify financial risks and propose mitigation strategies to
leadership.
Accounting & Reporting
Prepare and review financial statements, key performance reports,
and reconciliations.
Maintain accurate records across all financial platforms, ensuring
data integrity and timely updates.
Accounts Receivable & Client Billing
Track and manage accounts receivable and oversee the full
collections process in alignment with firm policies.
Address client billing questions, provide resolution support, and
protect client relationships.
Approve non-standard payment plans and refunds, in coordination
with ownership.
Payroll & Benefits Administration
Administer bi-weekly payroll, verify hours, manage employee
leave/overtime, and coordinate benefits tracking.
Record and manage client cost advances in both accounting and case
management systems.
Tax & Compliance Reporting
Prepare annual financial statements and data for CPA tax
filings.
File 1099s, sales tax, and other required local, state, and federal
reports.
Ensure timely renewal of all applicable business licenses.
Billing Oversight
Supervise Billing Specialist to ensure timely invoice generation,
communication with clients, and adherence to firm policies
regarding payments and collections.
Strategic Financial Support
Provide financial analysis and data to support the firm's strategic
planning and operational decisions.
Controller Experience:
7-10 years' experience
CPA preferred but not required.
